Ga Yixe, Mixtec meander ring in sterling silver

The "Ga Yixe" ring is a vibrant homage to the rich pre-Hispanic Mixtec civilization of the Oaxaca region in Mexico. Engraved with motifs inspired by artifacts from Tomb 7 at the abandoned Zapotec site of Monte Alban, this piece resonates with the very essence of ancient history and the profound spirituality that once permeated these sacred lands.

This work specifically draws from one of the rings discovered in the ritual offering of Tomb 7 at Monte Alban. A group of Mixtec people regularly visited this sacred place to bury priestesses of the Goddess 9 Herb, also known as Ga Yixe in the Zapotec language. This goddess was revered as the protector of the land and fertility, playing a vital role in the lives and beliefs of these ancient peoples. She was often considered equivalent to the Aztec goddess Cihuacoatl, symbolizing maternity and creation.

The motif engraved on the ring, called "Greek key," is a distinctive pattern frequently found in the art and craftsmanship of the pre-Hispanic period, notably in architecture, ceramics, and painting. This geometric symbolism carries various potential meanings, but it is often associated with the representation of water, a symbol of life and purification. In the context of the discovery of this ring, this interpretation seems particularly apt, recalling the intimate connections between humans, nature, and the deities that governed their world.

Thus, the "Ga Yixe" ring transcends mere jewelry to become an artifact laden with significance, bearing witness to the depth of Mixtec culture and its immutable heritage. It is a tangible link to the past, an open window to a fascinating world where the sacred and the mundane intertwined in sublime harmony.

The band is 12 mm large (0.472 inches).
