ABOUT
In 1842, Finnish mineralogist Nordenskiöld unveiled alexandrite, named in homage to Tsar Alexander II. Originating from Russia, this gem became the radiant symbol of Tsarist Russia due to its origins and dazzling colors.
Alexandrite, a rare variety of chrysoberyl, stands out with its unique characteristic: the ability to metamorphose its color. In natural light, it displays a vibrant blue-green hue, while under incandescent light, it transforms into a captivating reddish-purple. This visual metamorphosis adds to its charm, making alexandrite an exceptional gem sought after for its changing shades and rich imperial history.
There are few stories about alexandrite, a rare gem discovered relatively recently in 1842.
The origin of this gem dates back to 1830 when miners at the Tokovaya emerald source were astonished to see this green stone, akin to the coveted emerald, turn red in the light of their campfire, only to regain its green hue in daylight.
The green and red hues of alexandrite quickly became associated with the colors of Russian imperial military, propelling it as the national gemstone of Tsarist Russia. Its rarity and allure were such that Russian mines were depleted, making alexandrite a sought-after precious stone.
Today, it mainly comes from Sri Lanka and Brazil, perpetuating its fascinating history and timeless connection with imperial elegance and rare beauty.
Mines: Russia (the best quality), Brazil, India, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Myanmar, Madagascar and Zimbabwe
This precious gem, a true jewel with therapeutic powers, embodies a source of revitalizing energy and support for physical regeneration, adding a precious dimension to its legacy.
