Zia, Zapotec meander earrings in sterling silver

They are made of sterling silver (925) handmade in my studio.

These sterling silver earrings are meander used as pattern by the Zapotecs, a Pre-Hispanic culture of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. These undulations more or less geometric are developed especially during the post-classical period known in this region and are found especially on architecture. The best-known examples are the palaces and tombs of the archaeological Zapotec site of Mitla. We meet other examples of these meander in city-states like Yagul, Zaachila...
These patterns are also present in other objects, such as polychrome ceramics, but the most fascinating is the jewelry made during this period by the Zapotec and Mixtec civilizations. The best-known examples are the jewels of the tomb 7 of Monte Alban, the greatest treasure discovered in Mexico. Although Monte Alban is abandoned and no longer the capital of the Zapotec empire at that time, there realizes a lavish burial with lots of gold and silver jewelry. Including one finds there a silver ring with the same meander as those used in the realization of these earrings.

These meander are sometimes interpreted as representations of the serpent, symbol of water, hence the relationship with Cocijo, the Zapotec god of water and rain. It is known as Tlaloc by the Aztecs or Chac by the Maya.

I named these earrings Zia, to the memory of this animated drawing that made me dream, when I was a child, about these civilizations of Central and South America: The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Zia is the name of one of the main characters in the series performed on Pre-Hispanic background.

It is artisan etched. The etching process takes times but the result allows appreciating the intricate and delicate patterns. The bas relief effect is really nice. The deeper part is matte and the upper part has been sanded and polished. Shiny finish.

Etching is an artisanal process, which produces a unique design each time I use it. Two pieces with a same design will never be exactly the same by the hazards of the process. Each detail makes a unique piece.

They are 7.3cm long (2.874 inches).

The engraved sheet of Zapotec meander measures 5.6 x 1.4cm (2.204 x 0.551 inches).

You have the possibility of changing the classical sterling silver eawires by sterling silver clips for non pierced ears.
