INSPIRATION
Asclepius, also known as Aesculapius in the Roman world, is the Greco-Roman god of medicine and the art of healing. Son of Apollo, god of light and knowledge, he is said to have learned the use of medicinal plants and natural remedies. According to ancient accounts, he was struck down by Zeus for having brought the dead back to life, an act that disrupted the established order between gods and humans. After his death, Asclepius was placed in the sky as the constellation of the Serpent Bearer, also called Ophiuchus, reinforcing the ancient connection between medicine, observation of the human body and observation of the heavens.
Asclepius is most often depicted holding a staff around which a single serpent is coiled. This symbol is still associated today with medicine and healing practices. It should not be confused with the caduceus of Mercury or Hermes, which features two serpents entwined around a winged staff. In the case of Asclepius, the solitary serpent is linked to ideas of healing, renewal and knowledge of the body, in reference to the shedding of its skin, a phenomenon observed since Antiquity by physicians and philosophers.
These sterling silver earrings represent this Greco-Roman legend and its ancient symbol. They are designed as a vertically oriented frame in relief, with sides shaped like brackets. This form recalls an antique frame or display case, evoking objects preserved in the cabinets of curiosities of the neoclassical, baroque or Victorian periods, where science, art and collecting were closely intertwined.
Inside the frame, a serpent appears to crawl slowly. Its skin is textured with tribal-inspired patterns, adding depth and material presence while recalling the symbol of Asclepius and ancient representations of the serpent in Mediterranean cultures. The silver work highlights the contrast between smooth areas and engraved surfaces, giving these earrings an appearance that is at once antique, narrative and timeless. They are intended for those who appreciate jewelry inspired by mythology, the history of science and the foundational symbols of our culture.
