JEWELRY
INSPIRATION
Calaverita means “little skull.” The term “calaverita” comes from the Spanish word “calavera” and refers to the many representations of skeletons and skulls found in Mexico. These forms appear in particular as life-size papier-mâché figures, as well as on traditional sweets made from amaranth seeds. They are most often encountered during the Day of the Dead, celebrated in Mexico and known as Día de Muertos.
This major popular and cultural celebration maintains a unique relationship with death, different from that found in many Western cultures. Skulls and skeletons are not associated with fear, but with memory, remembrance, and the symbolic presence of the deceased. They remind us that the dead continue to exist through stories, objects, images, and gestures passed down from one generation to another.
These sterling silver earrings reinterpret this tradition through a restrained and graphic design. They take the shape of a diamond frame with a raised border, each side forming a soft brace-like curve. This shape evokes an old frame, similar to those found in cabinets of curiosities from the neoclassical, baroque, or Victorian periods, places where science, collecting, and fascination with the natural and human world came together.
Inside the frame, the silhouette of a small stylized skull stands out, topped with a small star. This star can be seen as an evocation of the night sky and of souls that, according to many traditions, continue to watch over the living and to inhabit the collective imagination. Without any mystical assertion, it gently suggests the persistence of memory and the place that absent loved ones still hold in our thoughts and dreams.
These earrings are a reminder that loved ones, even if they are no longer physically present on this earth, remain alive through memory, emotion, and the stories we continue to share.
