Drops of the Orient, paisley flame earrings in sterling silver

Drops of the Orient is a pair of sterling silver earrings shaped like delicate droplets, adorned with a motif inspired by traditional Kashmiri designs, also known as paisley. These flowing, dynamic curves—commonly found on shawls, ties, or luxurious textiles from Persia—are called boteh in Iran. This ancient pattern, of Iranian origin, symbolizes a stylized cypress tree, a sacred figure in Mithraism, and is also associated with Zoroastrianism.

The boteh motif appears in the ornamentation of Persian royal crowns, though it is curiously absent from carpets. Some interpretations see in it the sacred flame of Zoroaster: in Zoroastrianism, this fire is a divine symbol, embodying eternal truth, radiant light, purity, and the creative energy of Ahura Mazda, the supreme deity. Caught between sacred fire and vegetal power, this shape becomes a bridge between elements—an embodied flame, rooted in the earth.

The earrings thus take on a silhouette that is both fluid and fiery: a drop or a flame, depending on one's perspective. The central engraved motif seems to spring from a stylized plant, with leaves or petals reminiscent of a lotus, rising upward in graceful arabesques like dancing flames. This central element is framed by two nested borders: the first, a row of dots; the second, a ring of small flowers—or stylized flames—enhancing the ornamental and symbolic richness of the piece.

At the bottom of each earring, fine dangling silver charms add a subtle movement, extending the upward motion with a shimmering play of light. They catch the light like flickers of fire or glints of sunlight on a droplet of water.

These earrings are a celebration of the mystical East, of the sacred embodied in natural forms, and of the intimate connection between elemental forces. They carry within them the memory of an ancient symbolism, balancing spirituality, elegance, and energy.
