JEWELRY
INSPIRATION
The design of the Icho ring is inspired by the singular and graceful shape of the ginkgo biloba leaf, a legendary tree whose lineage dates back over 270 million years—around forty million years before the first dinosaurs appeared. A true living fossil, it belongs to the oldest known family of trees.
In the East, the ginkgo is a sacred tree, a powerful symbol of longevity, hope, love, and the unity of opposites. Its leaf, both dual and unique, embodies harmony between contrasts. In Japanese art, the ginkgo is everywhere: it decorates kimonos, inspires the shape of certain traditional hairstyles, and appears in motifs of classic woodblock prints. It is also an emblem of resilience: after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a few ginkgo trees near the epicenter survived and regrew, becoming a living symbol of hope and renewal.
In Japanese, Icho (いちょう or 銀杏) refers to the ginkgo biloba, the tree with fan-shaped leaves. The word originates from ancient Chinese 鴨脚 (Ya-Tchio or Ya-chio), which literally means “duck’s foot,” referring to the shape of its leaves. Transmitted to Japan, the term evolved phonetically into “ichō,” while retaining its connection to this sacred tree.
The Icho ring delicately captures this mythical leaf: its stem stretches and curves to wrap lightly around the finger, like a gentle dance. Set on a solid silver band approximately 0.12 in (0.3 cm) wide, the leaf is sculpted in relief and highlighted with a small silver bead representing the base of the stem.
This piece is perfect for anyone drawn to nature, venerable trees, Japanese aesthetics, and the timeless beauty of the ginkgo biloba.
