JEWELRY
INSPIRATION
The circular shape, hollowed in the center, is a common and sacred figure in Japan. Although the traditional magatama is not perfectly round but shaped like a comma, circular pendants inspired by it can sometimes be found, symbolizing protection, connection to the divine, and harmony among forces. The sacred circle (ensō 円相 in Zen calligraphy), in Zen aesthetics, is drawn in a single stroke, sometimes open or closed, and embodies enlightenment, unity, cosmic harmony, and fertile emptiness. When this circle is translated into jewelry, the hollow center emphasizes the idea of emptiness as a creative principle and a place of passage.
Many pierced circular pendants also recall ancient Japanese coins (such as copper "mon" coins with a square or round hole in the center). Wearing this type of pendant is therefore associated with prosperity, luck, and the flow of energies. In some Shinto or Buddhist jewelry, the hollow circle at the center symbolizes both heaven and earth, perfection, and the continuity of life. The central void can be seen as a vital breath, an opening to the invisible, or a gateway to the spiritual world.
"The Wind and the Sea" pendant illustrates the union of two essential natural forces, capable of bringing both gentleness and fury. These two elements, elusive and powerful, inspire a mix of admiration and awe. Humanity has always sought to tame them, like fire and earth, yet ancestral wisdom reminds us that nature always imposes its ultimate truth. Maritime storms, where waves and gusts respond to one another, testify to this eternal, sublime, and formidable dance.
This hollow circular pendant within another circle represents a succession of waves and clouds swept by the wind. Its border follows the flow of movement, creating a continuous visual rhythm. The theme of water, and particularly the sea, is central to Japan: as an island nation, it has built its identity, culture, and sustenance around the ocean. The sea is nourishing, protective, yet also unpredictable and dangerous.
In this jewel, the circle becomes a symbol of harmony between the fluidity of the waves and the lightness of the clouds, between sky and sea, in an eternally shifting balance.
