Celtic moon, Celt nocturnal star earrings in sterling silver

These delicate earrings take the shape of a crescent moon engraved with intricate Celtic knots, evoking Breton legends and nighttime vigils beneath star-strewn skies.

For the Celts, the Moon held an essential place in symbolism, spiritual beliefs, and the rhythms of life. Their worldview, deeply attuned to natural cycles, saw the Moon as a regulator of time, fertility, water, intuition, and transformation. Its influence was perceived in the tides, the seasons, the germination of plants, menstrual cycles, and sacred rituals. A feminine celestial body par excellence, the Moon was a bearer of mystery, instinctive wisdom, and invisible power—often associated with the spirit world, the veil between dimensions, and the forces of the unknown.

Though the Celtic world (Ireland, Brittany, Gaul, Wales) did not have a unified pantheon, several goddesses can be symbolically linked to the Moon through their attributes and domains:

  • Cerridwen (Wales): goddess of wisdom, inspiration (Awen), transformation, and magic. Keeper of the sacred cauldron, she presides over metamorphosis and embodies the initiatory power of the lunar cycles.
  • Arianrhod (Wales): her name means “silver wheel,” a direct reference to the full moon. She is the goddess of destiny, the stars, spiritual renewal, and cosmic cycles. She resides in the celestial fortress of Caer Arianrhod, sometimes identified with a constellation.
  • Rhiannon (Wales): primarily known as a goddess of horses and sovereignty, she is also linked to the Moon through her association with the Otherworld, fertility, and her supernatural grace. She acts as a guide between realms.
  • Épona (Gaul and the continental Celtic world): goddess of horses, fertility, and natural cycles, and a protector of riders and travelers. Though usually associated with the earth or the sun, some symbolic interpretations also view her as a lunar figure through her role as a guardian of passage and life.
  • Brigid (Ireland): goddess of the sacred flame, poetry, healing, fertility, and knowledge. While often seen as solar in her luminous aspect, her deep ties to natural feminine cycles and the flowing nature of inspiration also connect her indirectly to the Moon.

To make these crescent moons unmistakably Celtic, we adorned them with a motif that speaks clearly of their identity: the Celtic knot. Also known as infinity knots, these designs are recognized for their singularity and complexity. Each knot is made from one continuous thread, with no apparent beginning or end, looping and interlacing in elegant geometry to form endless patterns. These interwoven forms symbolize eternity, unity, cosmic balance, and the interconnectedness of all life. They express the unbroken cycle of birth, death, and rebirth—a central theme in Celtic spirituality—and reflect the enduring, invisible forces that govern the universe.

One can easily imagine these lunar earrings worn by a druidess, catching the pale silver light of the Moon during ancient nocturnal rites whispered in the sacred forests. With each movement of the priestess, the silver crescents would glimmer, as if invoking the powers of the heavens and honoring the sacred cycle of life.
