JEWELRY
INSPIRATION
The Octopus earrings are an ode to this complex and fascinating marine animal, the octopus. Long a source of inspiration in 19th-century literature, it was often perceived as dangerous and mysterious. At that time, many sailors’ tales, ship logs, and adventure novels described giant octopuses or “tentacled monsters.” These accounts, blending real observations with imagination, helped shape a powerful vision of the ocean depths.
In these narratives, the octopus becomes a diffuse threat, lurking beneath the surface and embodying the invisible dangers of the sea. It is associated with drowning, entrapment, and the disappearance of the body—very real fears for 19th-century readers. Among the most famous examples are the novels of Jules Verne, notably Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, as well as Victor Hugo’s The Toilers of the Sea, in which the octopus takes on an almost monstrous dimension.
In recent decades, however, scientific research has led to a better understanding of this animal. Studies have revealed a rare intelligence, remarkable adaptability, and complex behaviors, sometimes interpreted as forms of emotion. Gradually, earlier fears have given way to genuine fascination for this strange marine creature, poised between science and imagination.
These sterling silver earrings are shaped like a diamond, evoking an old raised frame whose sides form decorative brackets. Against a darkened background created by silver oxidation, the silhouette of the octopus stands out, like an image frozen in time. This presentation recalls walls crowded with frames, specimens, and rare objects associated with cabinets of curiosities, as they might have been imagined in the 19th century, blending neoclassical influences, Romanticism, and Victorian aesthetics.
With a style that lies between vintage and steampunk, these earrings are designed for those who love the world of maritime adventure, exploration narratives, and the mysteries of the sea, where science still meets imagination.
