Sugar skull, Mexican skull earrings in sterling silver

The "Sugar Skull" earrings feature a delicately engraved skull adorned with small floral motifs, inspired by the iconic imagery of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), celebrated annually on November 1st and 2nd. Deeply rooted in pre-Hispanic traditions, this celebration merges ancient Mesoamerican beliefs with Catholic rituals introduced during the colonial period.

In Mexican culture, death is not seen as a sad end, but rather as a natural part of life’s cycle. It is present in daily life, art, rituals, and even everyday objects. Representations of skulls and skeletons are commonly found in decorations, jewelry, and toys. Far from being morbid, these symbols express remembrance, joy, and a tender kind of humor when honoring the deceased.

The Day of the Dead is a special time when families gather in cemeteries—sometimes overnight—to pay tribute to their ancestors. Graves are decorated with bright orange marigolds (cempasúchil), incense, candles, favorite foods and drinks of the deceased, music, and personal items. Domestic altars (ofrendas) are also created at home, where sugar skulls (calaveras de azúcar) play a central role.

These small edible skulls, molded from sugar paste, are adorned with vibrant colors, stylized flowers, beads, glitter, or gold leaf. They may bear the name of a departed loved one—or even of the living—and serve as both offerings and gifts, keeping the memory of the departed alive in a light-hearted, affectionate way.

The "Sugar Skull" earrings draw on this tradition with a stylized silver interpretation: a delicate skull shape engraved with floral motifs, echoing the festive elegance of the decorated calaveras. The use of the English term “Sugar Skull” pays tribute to this internationally recognized tradition while anchoring the jewelry in a vivid and symbolic universe.

This piece, both ethnographic and artistic, celebrates life in one of its most universal expressions: memory, family, transformation, and the enduring bond between the living and the dead.
