Sami drum, shamanic instrument from Lapland necklace in silver

This necklace is a silver replica of a Sami drum from Lapland, a region covering northern Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. The Sami, or Sámi, are an indigenous people deeply rooted in these northern territories, with a culture and spiritual traditions that are very ancient.

The symbols engraved on the drum serve as a true map for the shaman’s spiritual journey. Each design has a precise meaning, guiding the shaman through the spiritual worlds. It is the shaman’s duty to know the myths related to the origins of the universe, Sami customs and codes, and to interpret these symbols in each session according to the needs of the seeker.

Our silver replica is inspired by the meticulous studies of Friis and Rae in the 19th century, notably in The White Sea Peninsula, a Journey in Russian Lapland and Karelia by Edward Rae (London, 1881), which describe and interpret the symbols of Sami drums in the context of Nordic mythology.

On this drum, the three realms of Nordic mythology are represented: Asgard (the paradise of the gods), Midgard (the world of humans), and Niflheim (the underworld). One of the mythological scenes depicts Thor setting out in a boat with the giant Hymir to fish for the great serpent Jörmungandr. The upper part of the drum also features Odin’s two ravens, Hugin (Thought) and Muninn (Memory), symbols of wisdom and knowledge.

Each symbol on this Sami shamanic necklace is rich in meaning, evoking a connection to nature, spirituality, and the link between visible and invisible worlds. This pendant is thus a tribute to the ancestral wisdom of the Sami and to Nordic mythology.
