JEWELRY
INSPIRATION
The armadillo is an animal found mainly in Central and South America, with some species also present in North America. It is a singular animal, easily recognizable by its thick shell made of articulated plates composed of keratin. This natural armor allows it to protect itself effectively. A distinctive trait of certain armadillo species is their ability to roll into a complete ball thanks to these movable plates, a defensive behavior sometimes compared to that of the hedgehog.
The armadillo is a discreet and rather harmless animal that leads a mostly nocturnal life. It moves close to the ground, digs into the soil, and leaves behind light, almost erased traces. In several Latin American cultures, the armadillo is associated with ideas of resilience, protection, and a deep connection to the earth. These interpretations are based on careful observation of its lifestyle, its shell, and its ability to adapt to a wide range of environments. It is also a curious and often endearing animal, fascinating for its physical characteristics and its calm behavior.
These sterling silver earrings take the shape of a diamond, recalling an old raised frame whose sides form decorative brackets. This shape evokes the ornamental frames once found on walls crowded with objects and curiosities in cabinets of curiosities. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, these spaces combined scientific observation, collecting, and a taste for the unusual, particularly during the Neoclassical, Romantic, and Victorian periods.
Inside the frame, the silhouette of the armadillo stands out, shown slightly curled into a protective posture. Above it appears a small, discreet star, suggesting its mainly nocturnal activity and the quiet atmosphere of the night. The silver work, with its contrasts and reliefs, gives these earrings an antique, narrative style inspired by nature and the history of science.
