Yashiro, Japanese Shippo sanctuary necklace in silver

Yashiro means “sanctuary” in Japanese. This sterling silver necklace features a fine chain and a triangular pendant, a symbol of passage and connection between two worlds. In Japanese culture, the triangle represents the balance between heaven, earth, and humanity. It evokes movement, unity, and the vital energy required to reach Enlightenment.

The pendant is engraved with a traditional Japanese pattern called shippo. This ancient motif is formed by the harmonious overlapping of identical quarter circles, creating a design reminiscent of flower petals, reflections of light, or stars in the sky. Its interlocking circles extend infinitely, symbolizing continuity, prosperity, and universal harmony. In Buddhist tradition, shippo represents the Seven Treasures: gold, silver, pearl, coral, crystal, agate, and lapis lazuli — gemstones associated with wisdom and purity.

Highly appreciated during the Edo period (1600–1868), the shippo pattern adorned kimonos, ceremonial fabrics, and everyday objects. It embodied the wish for a peaceful, prosperous, and spiritually balanced life.

In our version, the shippo motif is enriched with stylized flowers, notably cherry blossoms. The sakura, Japan’s iconic flower, symbolizes the fleeting beauty and fragility of life. It also embodies luck and renewal. In Japan, cherry blossoms are closely linked to moments of transition — weddings, springtime, and tea ceremonies — reminding us of the beauty of the present moment. Their brief yet radiant bloom invites reflection on life, gratitude, and serenity.
