Peka’enana, Polynesian cross ring in sterling silver

The Peka’enana ring takes its name from the famous Marquesan cross, an emblematic symbol of the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. This cross is one of the oldest and strongest motifs in traditional Marquesan art and is often used in tattoos, sculptures and sacred ornaments. The ring features a continuous frieze of this Polynesian symbol, creating a rhythmic and harmonious pattern that wraps around the finger.

The word Peka’enana is the local name for this cross and is said to mean “the people’s cross”. This name highlights its deep connection to the community, the ancestors and collective identity. Its complex shape forms a cross with flowing and balanced lines, evoking natural order and the smooth circulation of energy. It suggests a balance between visible and invisible forces, symbolizing harmony, protection and connection with the universe.

Also known as the “Marquesan cross” or “Marquesas cross”, this symbol is sometimes referred to as the “cross of human figures” or the “cross of men”. According to certain interpretations, it represents stylized human figures arranged symmetrically, forming a cross with soft and harmonious contours. These figures may evoke bonds between people, group unity, transmission between generations and the place of humankind within the world.

Worn as jewelry, the Marquesan cross is often associated with protection, grounding and balance. It is a powerful symbol of Polynesian spirituality, recalling the connection between humans, nature, ancestors and the elements.
