Tlaloc, Aztec pendant in sterling silver and chrysoprase

The Tlaloc pendant draws inspiration from the pre-Hispanic civilizations of Mexico, particularly the Aztec culture. It pays tribute to the god of rain, a vital figure in Mesoamerican belief systems.

At the heart of this creation lies the stone itself: a drop-shaped chrysoprase with subtle shades of blue and green. This color evokes not only the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea along Mexico’s eastern coast, but also the cenotes—sacred natural sinkholes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock. The crystalline water hidden in these cavities was seen as a gateway to the divine. These places were long associated with rituals dedicated to Tlaloc among the Aztecs, to Chac among the Maya, and to Cocijo among the Zapotecs.

Tlaloc, god of rain, water, lightning, and fertility, held a central place in a region where life depended on the rhythms of the climate. He was also known as Tlalocantecuhtli, meaning “he who makes things flow” or “he who sows,” highlighting his deep connection to agriculture and prosperity.

This pendant was conceived as a contemporary version of a talisman that might once have adorned the neck of a high Aztec priest. The chrysoprase is set on a silver plate with triangular prongs that recall the fangs seen on masks of Tlaloc, while allowing the aquatic hues of the stone to remain fully visible.

The silver plate itself is shaped like a raindrop and edged with a fine silver wire, giving the piece an airy, modern feel. On the back of the pendant, openwork circular motifs suggest cenotes or the ripples of water puddles, reinforcing the bond between the stone, water, and the sacred.
