Craquelure, lava flow ring in sterling silver

The Craquelure ring is an evocation of a lava flow as it is sometimes imagined, with dark, cooled blocks floating on a glowing red stream of lava. This phenomenon, here frozen in this ring, corresponds to a lava texture known as ʻaʻā.

This Hawaiian term originally means “to burn,” “fire,” “anger,” or even “pain” in some interpretations, referring to the sharp and painful sensation of walking on this type of lava. Over time, it came to mean “stony lava,” describing a rough lava made of broken and solidified fragments.

In an active ʻaʻā lava flow, the surface blocks move slowly, roll, and break apart while the molten lava advances underneath. The dark crust constantly fractures and sometimes reveals cracks where the still-incandescent lava glows between the fragments. This is why the surface can resemble a field of volcanic stones with glowing lava appearing between them.

There is also a descriptive term used by some volcanologists: clinker lava. This word refers precisely to the cooled blocks that form the surface of an ʻaʻā lava flow. This type of lava is common in the volcanic landscapes of Hawaii and in many volcanic regions of the world. It moves slowly, leaving behind a field of sharp, black fragments, unlike pāhoehoe lava, which is more fluid, smoother, and often forms rope-like waves.

The texture of the Craquelure ring is a reminder that our lives are not always as smooth and gentle as we might wish. Our body and our mind accumulate, day after day, the joys and sorrows of everyday life, both physically and mentally.
