Garance, red dyer’s necklace in silver, coral, black agate and carnelian

The “Garance” necklace is built around a teardrop-shaped carnelian cabochon, a gemstone with warm, vibrant reflections. This stone rests delicately on a slightly wider plate, its oxidized border subtly tracing the serrated silhouette of a madder leaf. Small, irregular notches, patiently cut by hand with a jeweller’s saw, create a natural, organic effect, reminiscent of the plant’s fragile texture.

At the base of the setting, three small soldered discs evoke the floral buds of the madder, like a promise of life and renewal. The back of the pendant is pierced with a finely chiselled botanical design composed of tiny leaves, recalling the delicacy and lightness of the madder’s climbing stems.

The necklace itself is formed around a rigid wire, adorned with silver beads, red coral, and black agate. The black berries of the madder, the characteristic fruit of this perennial plant, find their echo in the necklace’s dark beads, creating a harmonious dialogue between stone, metal, and natural elements.

Madder, a plant from the Rubiaceae family, is renowned for its climbing stems, its delicate white flowers, and its black berries. Above all, it is celebrated for its roots, rich in red pigments that have been used since Antiquity as a dye, giving birth to the “garance” colour — a symbol of life, passion, and creativity.

It was upon hearing the name Garance for the first time that this creation, brimming with vitality and colour, came to life — a poetic homage to nature and its mysteries.
