ABOUT
The pendant "Movement" embodies a true ode to the history and culture of the Olmecs, a prominent pre-Columbian people of Mesoamerica. This silver jewelry elegantly depicts a stylized footprint, offering a fascinating window into the artistic and symbolic practices of this flourishing civilization.
The Olmecs, who thrived between 2500 BCE and 500 BCE, left an impressive cultural legacy along the Gulf Coast of Mexico, in the Basin of Mexico, and along the Pacific Coast. As the oldest known civilization in Mesoamerica, their influence extends far beyond their own geographical borders, often regarded as the very source of the cultural traits shared by later Mesoamerican civilizations, hence their nickname "mother culture."
This particular pendant offers a remarkable representation of the concept of movement, with its three overlapping footprints. Like steps frozen in time, they evoke a dynamic progression, as if telling a story through each step. It is fascinating to imagine that this motif could have once been used to trace a route or communicate narratives in a visual language now lost.
The object that served as a model comes from the archaeological site of Las Bocas, a land steeped in history located in the municipality of Izúcar de Matamoros, in the heart of Mexico. Las Bocas has been the scene of important discoveries, including ceramic figurines and other precious artworks, bearing witness to the artistic and cultural richness of the Olmecs.
In the 1960s, increased interest from collectors in these treasures led to intensive exploration of the site, contributing to the looting of the area and resulting in many of these objects ending up in private collections.
Thus, the pendant "Movement" embodies a tangible connection with an ancient civilization, offering a vivid reminder of the richness and depth of Mexico's pre-Hispanic history.
