Art deco peacock, sun and moon bird earrings in silver and brass

Born in reaction to the exuberant curves of Art Nouveau, Art Deco emerged as a major international artistic movement during the first half of the twentieth century. Celebrating the industrial age, this style is characterized by geometric forms, rigorous symmetry, and elegant lines in art, decoration, and architecture. These earrings are inspired by this distinctive geometry and by the angular aesthetic that made the period so famous.

The peacock, a majestic bird native to Asia, became an iconic motif widely used in both the Art Nouveau and later the Art Deco movements. After the hardships of the First World War, the Roaring Twenties celebrated pleasure, luxury, and extravagance. The peacock, a royal bird par excellence, came to embody pride, renewed splendor, and a fascination with Orientalism and distant lands, themes that were highly fashionable thanks to the Ballets Russes, international exhibitions, and the great archaeological discoveries of the early twentieth century. With its noble bearing, graceful gait, and spectacular plumage, the peacock became a reflection of a sophisticated social elite devoted to fine jewelry, sequined gowns, luxurious interiors, and glamorous evenings.

In many cultures, the peacock is also a symbol of beauty, prosperity, nobility, and rebirth. Its plumage, covered with eye-like markings, sometimes evokes a star-filled sky or countless eyes watching over the world. In India, where it is especially revered, it is associated with grace, protection, and harmony.

Here, the peacock is depicted from behind, looking to the side and proudly raising its head. Its long tail cascades downward in a graceful and natural movement. The bird stands before a silver arch reminiscent of an ancient doorway, a window opening onto a precious moment, or a passage between two worlds. This geometric structure also recalls the monumental architecture that inspired many Art Deco artists.

At the base and near the top of the arch are two polished golden brass discs representing the moon and the sun. Between these symbolic celestial bodies, the peacock seems perfectly at home. Its head rests upon one while its tail reaches toward the other, as though it were connecting the two ends of the sky.

The peacock thus appears to unite within itself the two faces of the heavens. Beneath the sun, its plumage seems to blaze with golden, green, and turquoise reflections that recall the vibrant colors of daylight. At nightfall, its deep blues and violet shades evoke the mysteries of twilight and the dreams carried by the moon. Its ever-changing feathers appear to capture light in all its forms, shifting from solar brilliance to the delicate shadows of evening.

Through its fascinating beauty and shimmering colors, the peacock becomes a bird that symbolically links the sun and the moon, day and night, radiant light and the realm of dreams. Suspended between these two celestial bodies, it becomes the guardian of a precious balance between strength and gentleness, brilliance and mystery, reality and imagination.
