Toltec sun, pre-Hispanic earrings in silver

The “Toltec Sun” earrings are inspired by the motifs of the pre-Hispanic civilizations of Central America, particularly Mexico, where we live. The art that can still be seen on every street corner today bears witness to the living heritage of these ancient cultures and their sacred vision of the universe. Their symbolic representations have endured through the centuries, transforming over time, and this piece offers a personal and poetic interpretation of a solar motif—venerated by these ancient peoples and celebrated in the ritual songs of Indigenous communities.

We chose to associate this creation with the name of the Toltecs, one of Mesoamerica’s major civilizations. This culture flourished between the 10th and 12th centuries around the archaeological site of Tula, in northern Mexico. The name “Toltec” comes from the Nahuatl word Toltekatl, often translated as “master artisans” or “master builders.” In Aztec oral traditions, the Toltecs were regarded as the founders of art, science, and ritual. Their legacy was so prestigious that the Aztecs themselves claimed Toltec descent to legitimize their rule and authority.

The earrings feature a large silver wire circle evoking the stylized silhouette of the sun, source of heat and vital energy. Four petal-shaped dangles hang from the circle, symbolizing the growth of plants made possible by the sun’s light. Within the circle, two drop-shaped forms nest delicately, suspended from the upper arc. Also crafted in silver wire, these drops represent water—another essential element in both the natural balance and in Mesoamerican cosmologies. Like the sun, water was perceived as a living, sacred force, vital to all life.

This piece pays tribute to a worldview in which every element is interconnected and imbued with spiritual significance. Between light and fluidity, between solar force and water’s memory, these earrings celebrate the elegance of ancient art and the subtle breath of a sacred nature.
