Tachiwaki, Japanese steam ring in sterling silver

Our Japanese ring “Tachiwaki” features a traditional motif bearing the same name, which means “rising steam.” The two wavy lines engraved on the band represent vapor gracefully ascending toward the sky. Because of its refinement and complexity, this motif was once reserved for the kimonos of high-ranking individuals, symbolizing prestige and sophistication.

In this creation, the Tachiwaki pattern is paired with a central cloud, forming a new motif called “Kumotatewaku.” This combination poetically evokes the mist that rises over marshes, ponds, and waterways in spring. This morning vapor, known as “kiri” in Japanese, gently envelops the landscape in a mysterious, light softness—like a quiet breath of nature and serenity.

The Tachiwaki motif symbolizes not only the elevation of the spirit but also resilience and the ability to overcome adversity—like steam slowly yet steadily rising toward the sky. The “Tachiwaki” ring thus becomes a metaphor for personal growth, perseverance, and inner harmony, echoing the subtle and ephemeral beauty of Japan’s misty landscapes.

Thickness of the ring: this model can be made with thicknesses of 1 mm, 1.3 mm or 1.6 mm. For reference, go to the last photo of the slideshow.

The ring thickness on the model is 1.3 mm.

Important: depending on your finger size, the solder at the back of your ring will show an interruption in the pattern with a plain vertical and in order to keep an overall harmony. Each rind is custom made and each finish will also be custom made (please refer to the example picture at the end of the photo series).
