Shaman drum, Scandinavian Sami pendant in sterling silver
The drum is the key to the Sami cosmology. The Sami shaman had a tight relationship with his drum which was also made by himself.
The symbols on the drum are like a cognitive map for the spiritual journey of the shaman in the 3 levels of the universe. The Sami drum is also a mythic representation of the world. In the center, there is the sun. Around the sun, you have a world divided in 3: the upper realm of the gods, the middle realm of the humnas, and the lower realm of the dead.
This pendant is a sterling silver replica of a shaman drum from Sweden from Lule Lappmark.
The center of the drum represents the sun. but the Ahkka goddesses accompany the moon as well as other astral figures in the upper realm. The lower section is made of anthropomorphic and theriomorphic figures.
On a Sami shaman drum, each drawing is a symbol. It is the duty of the shaman to know myths concerning the origins of the universe, the culture and the codes, and to interpret them according to the needs.
