Amazonite, history and healing properties
"Nila paksi" earrings with amazonites

Amazonite derives its name either from its supposed connection to the Amazon River, where some green stones were reportedly discovered, or as a tribute to the formidable Amazonian warriors, thus symbolizing courage.

Recent research suggests that this stone is not native to the Amazon and may have been confused with another mineral. Long associated with the presence of copper, more recent studies reveal that its green hue actually comes from a slight combination of lead and water.

Amazonite, belonging to the feldspar family, specifically the microcline variety, forms in granitic rocks. This stone is characterized by its captivating green or blue-green color when polished, which results from the presence of lead in the form of microscopic inclusions. Its intensity varies depending on the concentration of lead. This mineral is often found in pegmatites, a type of igneous rock formed by the slow crystallization of magma, which promotes the formation of large crystals.

History, legends and beliefs about the amazonite

The use of Amazonite dates back to antiquity, with traces found in civilizations such as Mesopotamia, India, Egypt, and Sudan.

In Mesopotamia, this stone was believed to be dedicated to Tiamat, goddess of the salt waters and oceans where chaos reigns. According to Babylonian mythology, Tiamat is the origin of everything, giving birth to the first gods through her union with the god of fresh waters. This ancient association grants Amazonite a mythical dimension, linking this precious stone to the very genesis of the universe according to these ancient beliefs.

Amazonite was a precious stone already revered by the Egyptians, as evidenced by a part of the Book of the Dead engraved on this gem. It was also prized for jewelry making, as demonstrated by a scarab ring found in the tomb of Tutankhamun, illustrating the high esteem in which it was held.

The Greeks attributed a connection between Amazonite and the famous Amazon warriors, who were believed to adorn their shields with this stone, symbolizing its association with courage and strength.

Among the Navajo Native Americans, Amazonite was associated with Estsanatlehi, the goddess who created humans, adding a spiritual and sacred dimension to this multifaceted stone.
Other Native American tribes used it in healing and protection rituals to attract positive energies and ward off negative ones. Shamans considered it a link to the spirits of nature, further enhancing its mystical aura.
