Charoite properties

Charoite, a rare and fascinating gemstone, is found exclusively in a single region of the world: the Alban Mountains in Siberia, near the Chara River. Its name, derived from the Russian word "chary," meaning "magic" or "charm," perfectly evokes its enchanting and mysterious allure.

Discovered in 1947, charoite was scientifically described and officially recognized only in 1978. It belongs to the silicate group and forms in metasomatic rocks under temperatures ranging from 200 to 250 degrees Celsius, making it particularly rare. This unique formation gives charoite its stunning hues, ranging from deep purple to lilac, often streaked with white or black veins.

Charoite exhibits a fibrous or marbled appearance, creating a sense of movement on the stone’s surface, as if its colors dance in the light. This phenomenon is known as "chatoyancy." Additionally, besides its beautiful purple shades, charoite may also contain inclusions of microcrystals, giving it a slight opacity.

Physically, charoite has a hardness of 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, making it quite durable while remaining relatively easy for artisans to work with. It is also known for its slight fluorescence under ultraviolet light, enhancing its magical appearance.
