Dwennimmen, African Adinkra ring in silver

The Dwennimmen ring originates from the Akan peoples of West Africa (Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire). These cultures created the Adinkra symbols, which represent proverbs or traditional sayings from their culture. Each symbol carries an idea, a piece of wisdom, or a value related to life, nature, or human experience.

Adinkra symbols are often used to decorate pottery, textiles, and wood carvings. They are especially known for being printed on traditional fabrics called Adinkra cloths. These symbols are used to communicate visual messages connected to traditional wisdom, aspects of daily life, and the surrounding environment.

There are many different symbols, each associated with a specific meaning. Some researchers consider this collection of symbols as a form of visual language, sometimes even compared to a symbolic writing system.

Adinkra symbols were originally created by the Abron people of the Gyaman region, an Akan group. According to different historical sources, these symbols date either from the early 18th century or the early 19th century. The king of Gyaman, Nana Kwadwo Agyemang Adinkra, who ruled around 1818, is said to have created these symbols and given them his name. Other sources mention the year 1701, showing that the exact origin is still debated by historians.

For this ring, we chose the Dwennimmen symbol. This symbol represents the horns of two rams facing each other, seen from above. The curved shapes evoke the powerful horns of the animal and recall its natural strength.

In Akan culture, Dwennimmen symbolizes strength and humility. The message it conveys is that even powerful individuals should remain humble. The ram’s horns represent power, protection, and the ability to defend oneself, while the calm and docile nature of the animal reflects modesty.

This symbol highlights that true strength is not only physical power or authority, but also the ability to remain humble and respectful. It represents the balance between power and modesty, between strength and wisdom.
