JEWELRY
INSPIRATION
The "Ga Yixe" ring pays tribute to the rich pre-Hispanic Mixtec civilization of the Oaxaca region in Mexico. Engraved with motifs inspired by the artifacts from Tomb 7 at the abandoned Zapotec site of Monte Albán, this piece resonates with the ancient history and spirituality that once filled these sacred lands.
This jewelry specifically reproduces one of the rings discovered in the ritual offering of Tomb 7 at Monte Albán. A group of the Mixtec people regularly visited this sacred site to bury the priestesses of the goddess 9 Grass, also known as Ga Yixe in the Zapotec language. This goddess was venerated as the protector of the land and fertility, playing a vital role in the life and beliefs of these ancient peoples. She was often considered equivalent to the Aztec goddess Cihuacoatl, a symbol of motherhood and creation.
The engraved motif on the ring, called "grecas," is a distinctive design frequently found in the art and craftsmanship of the pre-Hispanic period, especially in architecture, ceramics, and painting. This geometric symbolism carries many possible meanings, but it is often associated with the representation of water, a symbol of life and purification. In the context of this ring’s discovery, this interpretation feels particularly fitting, highlighting the intimate connections between humans, nature, and the deities that governed their world.
