Calaca, Mexican skull earrings in sterling silver

These sterling silver earrings represent calacas, iconic symbols of Mexican tradition and the Day of the Dead.

The term “calaca” refers to the skeleton or skull, used as a decorative motif for centuries. These representations have their roots in pre-Hispanic beliefs, tied to the cycle of life and death, and were later blended with traditions from Europe. Today, they embody a strong cultural symbol in Mexico, passed down from generation to generation.

Traditionally, calacas are adorned with cempasuchil flowers (marigold or calendula), also called the “flower of the dead.” These vibrant yellow and orange blossoms symbolize life, the sun, light, and rebirth. They are believed to guide the souls of the departed back to the living during the Day of the Dead festivities. Calacas are also often depicted in joyful scenes: dancing, playing music, singing, feasting. This festive vision of death expresses an essential idea: to celebrate the memory of the deceased with joy and love rather than sadness.

The earrings we offer capture this lively and colorful essence of Mexican tradition. Two small, delicately sculpted skulls feature cempasuchil flowers as eyes, surrounded by spirals of leaves and petals. Every detail pays tribute to Mexican folk art and its vibrant creativity. This jewel evokes the beauty, strength, and spirituality of the Day of the Dead, transforming the skull symbol into a celebration of life after death, of memory, and of renewal.
