Early in the morning, at dawn, as the school bus wound its way along the narrow country roads to pick up all the local children, I would often look through its windows at the bare autumn fields and the small woods dotting our neighborhood. I would often see crows flying from the fields in the distance, creating a scene that was both melancholic and serene.
