This beautiful silver cross is a custom order created for one of our clients who wanted a pendant composed of a double cross. This piece of jewelry has an appearance that is at once simple, spiritual, and deeply symbolic, inspired by faith, resilience, and ancient sacred objects.
The lower cross was hammered to recall the raw aspect of the wood of the original cross. Its irregular surface evokes living material, the traces of time, sacrifice, and the trials endured. It was then oxidized to highlight the relief and texture of the metal, giving the whole piece an ancient and almost archaeological appearance, like a fragment of a sacred object rediscovered after centuries.
The upper cross, smaller in size, delicately overlaps the first one. Its smooth matte finish contrasts with the raw texture of the main cross. This opposition between the two surfaces reinforces the ideas of trust, sincerity, inner peace, and light emerging from the heart of hardship.
The name of this cross comes from the Italian word Pietà, meaning “pity” or “compassion.” In Christian religious art, it refers to the representation of the Virgin Mary as Mater Dolorosa, the Mother of Sorrows. She holds the body of Christ in her arms after the descent from the cross, just before his entombment. This deeply human image represents suffering, maternal love, mourning, sacrifice, and the acceptance of a destiny already written.
The double cross of this pendant may recall that the burden carried by Yeshua was also carried by his mother, watching her son suffer while knowing that it all had to be fulfilled. This superposition of crosses then becomes the symbol of shared pain, a deep spiritual bond, and a love stronger than death.
In contemporary jewelry design and in certain spiritual approaches, this raised composition carries several powerful meanings.
Duality – Earth and Heaven, Human and Divine:
The large cross often represents the earthly world, the body, matter, or human life with its limits and hardships. The smaller cross, soldered at the center of the first, symbolizes instead the divine spark, the soul, the inner garden, or the sacred presence hidden at the heart of existence. It reminds us that the spiritual can inhabit matter and that light can exist even in the middle of darkness.
The Path of Resilience – Sacrifice and Rebirth:
In some modern interpretations, the large cross represents the trials endured, the wounds of the past, or the burdens carried throughout life. The smaller cross placed above it symbolizes reconstruction, inner transformation, and the ability to rise again despite hardships. The past is not erased: it remains visible, but it is transcended by a new strength.
Amplified Protection:
Layering two identical sacred symbols is an ancient practice found in certain talismans, reliquaries, and protective objects. This symbolic accumulation aims to strengthen the spiritual charge of the object, as if the protection itself were doubled. The pendant then becomes a kind of spiritual and emotional shield.
In a more Christian interpretation, several additional meanings may also emerge.
The Mystery of the Incarnation – God Made Man:
The large outer cross symbolizes the historical and universal aspect of Christ’s sacrifice. The small cross placed exactly at the center represents the divine presence incarnated within the human world. It illustrates the Christian idea that God came to inhabit the human condition in order to share humanity’s suffering.
The Passage from Death to Life – The Triumphant Cross:
In early Christian and medieval art, it was common to superimpose a decorated or luminous cross over a rougher cross. The large cross evokes the suffering of Good Friday and earthly torment, while the smaller cross symbolizes the Resurrection, victory over death, and eternal life. Spiritual light thus comes to cover and transcend suffering.
The Sacred Heart and the Spiritual Center:
The point where the branches of the cross intersect is often considered the symbolic Heart of Christ, the center of divine love. Adding a second cross precisely at this location sanctifies this central point. It may be seen as an invitation to look within oneself, rediscover one’s inner center, and cultivate spiritual peace.
With its raw and sacred appearance, this double cross pendant evokes ancient reliquaries, monastic objects, and medieval symbols as much as the inner journey, faith, reconstruction, and spiritual protection. It is intended for people who are drawn to meaningful jewelry, ancient Christian symbols, spirituality, and objects that evoke memory, sacrifice, and inner light.
