Feathered Serpent, Quetzalcoatl aztec god pendant in sterling silver
This pendant is inspired by an engraving of the feathered serpent, which is one of the most important gods of Mexico since it is found in different cultures. It is known as Kukulkan among the Mayans and Quetzalcóatl among the Aztecs.
In this case, it is an Aztec representation of the god which comes from the lid of a stone box called tepetlacalli. It is dated 1502-1520 A.D. and belongs to the Albert Hackmack collection. It is kept at the Museum of Ethnology in Hamburg, Germany.
These stone containers, the tepetlacalli, were probably used to store offerings, ritual utensils or the ashes of deceased rulers.
In this case, it could have belonged to or been commanded by the last Aztec ruler, Moctezuma II. It could have contained the ashes of Netzahualcóyotl, lord of Texcoco.
The pendant therefore represents Quetzalcóatl, the serpent quetzal or feathered serpent. He was the god of resurrection and reincarnation, but his attributions were very varied. He was also the god of the four elements (air, fire, earth and water).
Polished, shiny finish.
The feathered snake pendant is available in two sizes:
