Spartan shield, Greek Sparta hoplites cufflinks in sterling silver

They are made of sterling silver (925) made by hand in my workshop.

These cufflinks are inspired by a possible form would have adopted the shields of the hoplites (heavy infantry) of the Greek cities of Sparta in ancient times.
these shields of about 1 meter in diameter and 6 kg were decorated according to some text, with an inverted V-shaped (Λ) which would be an archaic form of the Greek letter lambda.
this letter is an abbreviation of "Lakedaimon" Lacedaemon, the name of the Greek city of Sparta during the classical period.
the Spartans would have begun to use this symbol since the Second Messinian War (640-620 B.C.) in order to recognize more easily on the battlefield.
However, there is no archaeological evidence of shield decoration of the Spartan hoplites with this kind of design. However, texts say that the sight of this Lambda symbol shook the enemies of the famous city of Sparta.
It remains that shield and strong image today, courage, strength, tenacity and cohesion because to be effective, the strength of the Spartan phalanx was based on the union of its soldiers who were protecting each other and advancing as a one man.

These cufflinks are the result of a custom order from a customer who sent us a picture of the film «The 300 Spartans" as a basis. These shields are prominently and we tried to follow these guidelines, to represent some lances and swords on the surface.

Diameter: 2 cm.

These cufflinks are really one of a kind. They are artisan etched. The etching process takes times but the result allows appreciating the intricate and delicate patterns. The bas-relief effect is really nice. The deeper part is matte and the upper part has been sanded and polished. Shiny finish.

Etching is an artisanal process, which produces a unique design each time I use it. Two pieces with a same design will never be exactly the same by the hazards of the process. Each detail makes a unique piece. Polished, shiny finish, oxidized back.
